Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic, would like to invite you most cordially to its international summer school, titled: Spreading the Word: Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.

With several decades of China’s economic growth and general increase in its political and cultural influence throughout the world, popularity of Chinese has been on the rise as well. The summer school titled Spreading the Word will be dealing with various aspects of teaching Chinese as a second language to non-native speakers. Lecturers invited to present at the school have abundant experience in teaching Chinese as well as in research of teaching Chinese.

Lecturers:

  • Chin-Chin Tseng (Department of Chinese as a Second Language, National Taiwan Normal University)

Received her  Ph.D. in Linguistics at University of Hawaii at Manoa, U.S.A; currently is the chair and full professor at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language of NTNU.

  • Huichen S. HSIAO (Department of Chinese as a Second Language, National Taiwan Normal University)

Received her Ph.D. in Linguistics at University at Buffalo, SUNY, U.S.A.; currently is an associate professor at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language of NTNU.

  • Michaela Zahradníková (Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University Olomouc)

Received her M.A. degree at the Department of Asian Studies of Palacký University, currently is a PhD candidate at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language of National Taiwan Normal University, and teaches at the Department of Asian Studies of Palacky University.

  • Hana Třísková (Oriental Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic)

Received her Ph.D. for thesis titled Segmental structure of the Mandarin syllable; currently continues research in phonetics and phonology of Modern Chinese as well as methodology of teaching Chinese pronunciation.

  • Yixuan Jandová Chen (Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University Olomouc)

Received her M.A. degree at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language of National Taiwan Normal University, currently is a lecturer at the Department of Asian Studies of Palacký University.

Credits:

This summer school is accredited by the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts Palacký University Olomouc and students can receive three credits for successful participation. However, these credits are not ECTS Credits. Students are usually able to obtain credits from their home institution and we will be happy to assist you in any way we can, however please be aware that the decision to award credits rests with your home institution.

Tuition fee:

Tuition for the whole duration of summer school is free of charge. Participants will however need to cover all their personal costs, including transportation, accommodation, visa, trips etc.

Travel expenses and accommodation:

We are not able to cover your accommodation and travel expenses. However, we can assist you by providing a list of recommended accommodation in various price categories.

About Palacký University and Olomouc

Palacký University Olomouc is the second oldest university in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest in Central Europe. Drawing on more than 400-year tradition of higher education it is nowadays a renowned centre for teaching and research.
